FDA-Cleared Aesthetic Lasers: What the Features Mean
Wavelength, pulse duration, spot size and cooling decide whether a laser suits your skin and your concern. A guide to reading device specs before booking in New York.
The short answer
An FDA-cleared aesthetic laser is a device the agency has allowed to market for specific indications — not a guarantee it is right for your skin. What determines the result is the wavelength, the pulse duration, the cooling system and the person operating it. Match those to your concern and your skin tone before you match the brand name.
What FDA clearance actually means
Nearly every aesthetic laser reaches the US market through the 510(k) clearance pathway, which means the manufacturer demonstrated the device is substantially equivalent to one already on the market. That is a different and lower bar than the premarket approval process used for high-risk medical devices. Clearance is not an endorsement of superiority and it is not a safety promise for every patient.
Clearance is also indication-specific. A device cleared for permanent hair reduction is not thereby cleared for melasma, and a laser cleared for wrinkles around the eyes is not automatically cleared for tattoo removal. When a clinic advertises a treatment, it is reasonable to ask which indication the device is cleared for and whether your intended use falls inside it. Off-label use by a qualified physician is legal and often appropriate — you simply deserve to know when it is happening.
New York's density of dermatology practices and med spas means the same device model is often available at both a physician's office and a storefront a block away. Ask who operates the laser, what license they hold, and what physician supervision is in place, because laser procedures involve medical judgment about settings, skin typing and complications, not just button pressing.
Know the types
Hair removal devices are defined by wavelength. Alexandrite at 755 nm is fast and effective on light skin with dark hair. Diode systems around 810 nm sit in the middle. Nd:YAG at 1064 nm penetrates deeper and is absorbed less by epidermal melanin, which makes it the standard choice for Fitzpatrick types IV through VI — a genuinely important distinction in a city as diverse as New York. Intense pulsed light is not a laser at all; it emits a broad spectrum through filters and is less precise, which matters most on deeper skin tones.
Vascular devices target hemoglobin. Pulsed dye lasers around 595 nm treat rosacea, facial redness and broken capillaries. KTP at 532 nm handles fine superficial vessels and brown spots.
Pigment and tattoo devices use very short pulses. Q-switched and picosecond systems fire in nanoseconds or picoseconds so the energy shatters pigment particles mechanically before heat spreads to surrounding tissue. Picosecond devices generally clear stubborn ink colors in fewer sessions.
Resurfacing splits into ablative and non-ablative. Ablative CO2 at 10,600 nm and erbium:YAG at 2,940 nm vaporize tissue for the strongest wrinkle and scar correction, with real downtime measured in one to two weeks. Non-ablative fractional devices around 1,550 and 1,927 nm heat columns beneath an intact surface, giving lighter downtime across several sessions. Fractional means the beam is divided into microscopic treatment zones with untreated skin between them, which is what makes recovery faster.
Newer 1,726 nm devices target sebaceous glands for acne rather than pigment or water, which is why they can be used across skin tones.
The specs that decide your result
Pulse duration is the specification people ignore and injectors argue about. Longer pulses deliver energy more gently over time and are safer on darker skin; shorter pulses hit harder and suit fine, light hair. A device with an adjustable pulse duration can be tuned to you.
Cooling protects the epidermis while the target beneath it heats. Contact sapphire cooling, cryogen spray and forced cold air all work, and their presence is the difference between a comfortable session and a burn. Ask what cooling the specific device uses.
Spot size and fluence govern depth and dose. Larger spots penetrate deeper and cover ground faster; fluence is the energy delivered per unit area. A conservative test patch at your settings, placed somewhere inconspicuous and reviewed after a few days, is standard practice for anyone with a skin tone at risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and any clinic that refuses one is telling you something.

Use a mineral sunscreen every day and avoid direct sun for at least two weeks before and after any laser session. Sun exposure before treatment raises burn risk; sun exposure afterward is the fastest route to hyperpigmentation. In practical New York terms, that means treating in the colder months if you spend summer weekends outdoors.
Skip retinoids, acids and scrubs for about five days on either side, avoid saunas, hot yoga and swimming pools for forty-eight hours, and do not pick at any crusting after resurfacing. After hair removal, shedding over the following one to three weeks looks like regrowth but is not — do not wax or pluck between sessions, since the root has to be present for the next treatment to work. Shaving is fine.
